PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Mommy and Me is an eight-week, once-a-week series that offers open-ended musical
experiences for caregivers and their children (0–4 yrs). Grounded in Orff approach and Kodály
philosophies, the program nurtures bonding, early development, and joyful exploration through
song, movement, and multisensory play.
Core Pillars

  • Open Exploration — children lead with curiosity; no rigid outcomes
  • Intercultural Embrace — lullabies and stories from families’ own cultures
  • Whole-Body Music — sign language, large-motor movement, and mindful touch
  • Safe & Natural Materials — wooden shakers, hand drums, Tibetan bowl, fabric scarves,
    parachute, soft puppets

    Private one-on-one sessions are available by request outside group hours.

    Parachute / Scarf
    Games 45–55 Gross-motor & teamwork; tempo and dynamics awareness
    Mindful Listening &
    Feelings Chat 55–58 Tibetan bowl tone or short live improvisation; children
    describe how the sound “feels”
    Good-bye Song &
    Transition 58–60 Ritual closing, stickers, hand-washing
  • GROUP-SPECIFIC HIGHLIGHTS
    Group 1 (Newborns → 18 mo)
  • Gentle rocking, lap bounces, baby sign language for core words (more, stop, music,
    mom, dad).
  • Focus on steady beat through caregiver touch (patting, heart-beat drumming on lap).
  • Sensory items: soft puppets, small maracas, colorful wooden sticks rain stick.
    Group 2 (18 mo → 4 yrs)
  • Partner/line songs that encourage holding hands & cooperative movement.
  • Child-choice instrument basket with mini-presentations (“What’s this called? How do we
    play it?”).
  • Intro to pitch & keyboard: coloured dots that map to piano keys for simple 3-note
    melodies.
  • Simple ensemble play: call-and-response drumming, echo singing.

LEARNING GOALS

  • Musical Foundations — beat, rhythm, pitch memory, conscious sound-making.
  • Social-Emotional — waiting turns, sharing, confidence in self-expression.
  • Language & Literacy — vocabulary through songs, sign language, and storytelling.
  • Cultural Awareness — honouring family heritage through music and lullabies.
  • Motor Skills — fine (shakers, small drums) & gross (parachute, walking songs)
    coordination.
  • HEALTH, SAFETY & HYGIENE
  • Instruments sanitized before/after each use.
  • Soft floor mats available.
